Artificial intelligence has affected all spheres of human social life, especially the religious domain, and it will continue to affect. An artificial intelligent agent is defined on the basis of the functions possessed by a natural intelligent agent, such as power, sensation, and learning. The principal question is this: when the means by which human beings attain acquired knowledge are similar to the means by which artificial intelligence acquires information and data—such as experience and observation—how can the reality of what occurs for human and artificial intelligence differ from each other? Through a precise examination of the concepts employed in artificial intelligence, one may take an effective step toward answering the doubts and challenges that artificial intelligence poses to Islamic theology. It will also become apparent that, fundamentally, no kind of knowledge comes into existence for artificial intelligence; rather, merely a homonymy has occurred and natural intelligence is distinct from artificial intelligence. Accordingly, even acquired knowledge (ʿilm ḥuṣūlī) cannot be attributed to artificial intelligence, let alone the presential knowledge (ʿilm ḥuḍūrī). For example, in the concept of free will too, homonymy has occurred. When, under different conditions, a computer is able to select one option and leave another, this state is described as “free will”; however, this condition differs from the psychological state of free will. Using an analytical-descriptive method, the present study undertakes a conceptual analysis of several key terms in artificial intelligence and philosophical psychology.
