Authority (wilāyah) over people is an inherent and exclusive right of God. He delegates this right to His chosen ones - prophets and their successors. Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a) as the successor of the Seal of the Prophets (s), possesses unique virtues and distinctions affirmed by the Qurʾān and Prophetic traditions. In his appeals and arguments for legitimate authority over others, he frequently cited these virtues as evidence. Despite acknowledgment of his exceptional virtues by opponents, they never submitted to his wilāyah. This phenomenon has historically perplexed seekers of truth. The present study aims to examine the reasons why some people rejected the authority of Amīr al-Muʾminīn, both at the time of the first and the third caliph, despite recognizing his virtues. The research employs a descriptive–analytical method with a library-based collection of sources. Findings indicate that worldly-mindedness and tribalism, the justice of Imam Ali (a), psychological factors such as jealousy, greed, stinginess, resentment, and enmity, as well as adherence to the covenant of the Ṣaḥīfah, were among the reasons for denying and turning away from the authority of Amīr al-Muʾminīn.
