Understanding and explicating the origin and reality of existence has always been a major concern for scholars, and various explanations have been offered in this regard. These include various perspectives. In the view of Peripatetic philosophers, the created beings and the creative Cause are treated as entirely distinct. From Mullā Ṣadrā’s perspective, there is a graded unity of existence and the notion of relational existence of creation in relation to God. In the view of Islamic mystics, existence is understood as a personal unity and the existence of a single being in the world is established, with all other beings regarded as manifestations or attributes of this absolute being. The latter view has been articulated in two ways: the “Unconditioned Divisive” and the “Unconditioned Divided” approach. In this article, the author critiques the “Unconditioned Divided” theory by highlighting its logical and ontological shortcomings. By reinforcing and consolidating the “Unconditioned Divisive” perspective, as well as revising certain premises, this paper synthesizes the two theories of graded unity and personal unity of existence, offering a novel interpretation in this regard.
