The doctrines of the primacy (aṣālat) and gradation (tashkīk) of existence, after considering quiddity (māhiyyah) as a mental construct, have significant implications in discussions on quiddity, including genus and differentia. Drawing on the principles of the primacy of existence and its gradation, this study aims to move beyond conventional interpretations and shows that: (1) differentia belongs to the category of existential concepts and not quiddative; and (2) the rules associated with genus and differentia are entirely transformed. This serves as a response to the crucial question: if the primacy and simplicity of existence are accepted in the Sadrian system, how can differentia and distinction be meaningfully defined on the basis of the unity of existence? Addressing this question dissolves the customary categorizations of beings that is based on traditional genus–differentia framework and establishes a coherent system grounded in the doctrines of the primacy and gradation of existence. Moreover, according to the precise understanding of gradation of existence, where the differentiating aspect is identical to the common aspect, the differentia of entities shifts from identity by distinction and opposition to a gradational and hierarchical one. Using a descriptive–analytical method and library-based research, this paper re-examines the differentia of entities through the lens of the primacy of existence.
