The foundations of reasoning in Aristotelian logic entail that valid reasoning is confined to simple categorical reasoning, thereby excluding any compound form. In contrast, Stoic logic (al-Manṭiq al-Rawāqī) is based on principles that only allows compound reasoning, and denies any argument built from simple or atomic propositions. Meanwhile, the foundations of Avicennian logic accommodate both simple categorical reasoning and compound conditional reasoning, as well as conjunctive-conditional reasoning. This study, employing a descriptive-analytical and comparative-argumentative method, examines the foundations of reasoning in these three logical traditions. It concludes that the integration of both categorical and conditional reasoning in Avicennian logic is based on its foundations of reasoning, and not merely the result of an arbitrary combination of Aristotelian categorical logic and Stoic conditional logic, which would be an incorrect combination of entirely distinct matters.
