The discussion on “causality” is an important one in philosophy, occupying a substantial portion of philosophical literature. A part of this discourse revolves around articulating the principle of causality, which is derived through contemplation on different modes of existence. This principle is sometimes expressed as the analytical proposition: "Every effect requires a cause," and at other times more precisely as: "Every contingent being, insofar as it is existentially dependent on another being, requires a cause." Given th÷e Qur’an’s emphasis on contemplation and reasoning, an important question arises: Can traces of the principle of causality be found through reflection on the Qur’an? This article examines both of the above propositions, demonstrating that they are inferable from various verses of the Book of Divine Wisdom, else these verses would lack coherent meaning if the principle of causality is not presupposed. The necessity of a cause, the need for a Creator and efficient cause, the persistent existential poverty and dependence on the Creator, the identification of an absolute and independent Creator, the identification of the effect (i.e., the created being) and the dependent being, and the āyah-centric outlook in the Qur’an, all point clearly to the necessity of affirming the principle of causality. The method adopted in this study is analytical-descriptive.
