Allamah Hassan Hassanzadeh Amoli, a prominent figure in mystical wayfaring founded on the tradition of self-knowledge, besides pursuing philosophical and rational study of the self as a philosopher, experienced the intuitive and presential self-knowledge as a mystic. He articulated and explained a method for transitioning from philosophical self-knowledge to intuitive self-knowledge. In the initial stage, he examined the nature of the nafs al-nāṭiqah (rational soul) from the aspect of philosophy and mysticism. Later, he elucidated its fourfold stages—sensory, imaginal, spiritual, and ideal (i.e. body, imagination, intellect, and beyond-intellect)—and elaborated on the corresponding four realms of existence: nature and nāsūt, imagination and malakūt, intellect and jabarūt, divinity and lāhūt. Subsequently, he delved into the mystical wayfaring and intuitive phase, addressing how a seeker, through direct encounters of the various stages of the self with the realms of existence, becomes a natural, imaginal, intellectual, and divine human. To answer this, he emphasized the connection between philosophical knowledge of the self and intuitive knowledge, described as spiritual wayfaring (sulūk). He outlined general principles and foundational programs for this sulūk and explained three sets of instructions: external (e.g., silence), internal (e.g., vigilance), and external-internal (e.g., invocation or zikr). He then discussed the ultimate outcome of these practices—purification (ṭahārah)—which he divided into external and internal forms. Internal purification encompassed the cleansing of imagination, thought, soul, intellect, heart, spirit, inner secret (sirr), and existence. For the realm of intuition, he elaborated on the stages of intuitive self-knowledge, including imaginal intuition, intellectual intuition, secret intuition, and existential intuition. With this outline, he elucidated the method of transition from scientific study of the self to intuitive self-knowledge in an organized system.
