Verse 30 of Sūrah al-Anbiyā’ informs of the fatq (separation/unravelling) of the heavens and the earth after they were in a state of ratq (joined entity/interwoven). Exegetes have proposed various interpretations of the concepts of ratq and fatq by referencing other Quranic verses that discuss the stages of creation of the universe, utilizing scientific theories related to the creation of the material world, and considering relevant narrations. These interpretations are centered upon the idea that ratq and fatq are two phenomena that occurred over time in the material creation and have come to an end. Thus, they are no longer observable by humans today. In his commentary Al-Mīzān, ‘Allāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī has accepted some of these views, but himself presents a novel perspective. He interprets ratq as potentiality and fatq as actuality within material entities. According to ‘Allāmah, ratq and fatq are two continuous phenomena in the material world that can be observed and reflected upon by humans in all eras. These two features align better with the context and purpose of the verse, thus highlighting the superiority of ‘Allāmah's view over other interpretations.
