According to ‘Allāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī's perspective, based on various explanations that also include semantic analysis, (maṣlaḥah) possesses real existence and its realization is subjected to the presence of a requisite and the absence of impediment and deterrent. From this viewpoint, expediency has four modes of existence: external, mental, thing in itself (nafs al-amr), and subjective, and it has a gradational existence. The realm of expediency's realization corresponds to the domains of creation and legislation. Although this interpretation is precise, due to the lack of comprehensiveness in the semantic analysis and the disputable nature of subjective existence, another perspective has been adopted. According to this alternative view, expediency refers to the suitability and appropriateness of any matter with the demands of true reality of a thing. Based on this, the condition for the realization of expediency in all things is not just the existence of a requisite and the absence of impediment and deterrent, but rather the conditions for the realization and existence of the suitability of any matter vary with the demands of various realities. The existence of expediency, in terms of actuality and potentiality, is divided into actual existence (mental and external) and potential existence; in terms of existential matters and matters pertaining to non-absolute nothingness, it is divided into real existence and hypothetical existence; and in terms of gradation and non-gradation, it is divided into gradational and univocal existence.
