In their chronology of Western and Islamic philosophy, the term “philosophy” has passed through many different meanings and applications. In its Greek arch which means the lover of knowledge, this term used to carry all human disciplines of knowledge, but in its newfangled meaning it bears “the rational method of research” alone. The latter meaning prepared the ground for falsafah muzaf (philosophy of meta-discipline) in the Islamic thought. Looking into the ongoing issues of the West and viewing the fact that many issues can be studied rationally, some contemporary Muslim intellectuals came to classify the term into: “philosophy of meta-discipline of sciences” and “philosophy of meta-discipline of matters”.
The author is of the view that the term falsafah muzaf not only lacks an equivalent in the West, but also its scope of application is illogical and destructive. There is no logical urge or scientific use for this term to be coined and introduced for rational research. Moreover, there would be no room for pure philosophy. What matters for our traditional thought is philosophy of meta-discipline of sciences the main part of which deals with the philosophical foundations of humanities.
