Abstract
Intellectuals hold differing opinions on whether human life is meaningful. If it is not, is there a way to make it meaningful? And if so, what is the criterion for such meaningfulness? Some thinkers regard human life as meaningless, with some proposing solutions to overcome this meaninglessness. On the other hand, others consider life meaningful but disagree on the criteria for its meaningfulness. Among these perspectives, Richard Taylor’s essay (a proponent of meaningfulness) has gained global recognition, with few works in the field failing to reference his views, either directly or indirectly. However, Taylor errs in identifying the true criterion for meaningfulness. This article, employing an analytical-critical method, aims to examine Taylor’s perspective. The findings reveal that Taylor’s view, despite certain strengths, lacks sufficient justification. He relies on flawed reasoning, such as incomplete induction and analogies, to support his claims and even presents contradictory assertions. Consequently, his efforts to substantiate his viewpoint and establish a criterion for meaningfulness prove futile.
