An Exposition of Ibn Sīnā’s Theory of the Reality of Revelation and Its Critique from the Perspective of Transcendent Philosophy

Abstract
The elucidation of the reality of revelation constitutes one of the key subjects in the thought of Muslim philosophers. The principal question concerns whether the revealed words were also directly revealed by God or not. Ibn Sīnā explains the process of revelation in three stages: first, the emanation of revealed truths by the Angel of Revelation; second, the reception of these truths by the Prophet’s intellect in the form of intelligible, universal, and simple meanings; and third, the transformation or descent of these universal teachings into letters and words within the Prophet’s imaginative faculty through the mediation of the Angel of Revelation. In the third stage, Ibn Sīnā attempts to demonstrate that divine revelation is not influenced by the Prophet’s cognitive faculties. This account is grounded in the principles of Peripatetic philosophy. However, it is challenged within the framework of Transcendent Philosophy, where Mullā Ṣadrā offers a deeper explanation of the reality of revelation. He believes that the Qurʾān in the course of descent, and the Perfect Human Being in the course of his ascent, each traverse four stages and at each level, they acquire the properties of that level. The Prophet receives revelation at each level corresponding to that level. This study examines the philosophical foundations of these two intellectual traditions, critiques the Peripatetic account through the principles of Transcendent Philosophy, and ultimately provides an evaluation of the two approaches.
