According to the narrations, the Realm of Dharr is not only the place where human beings confessed the Lordship of God, but also the place of their primordial creation prior to their elemental bodies. The origin of man’s corporeal disposition in the Realm of Dharr may be traced through the narrations concerning ṭīna or the creation of man from clay in that realm. Some Shiʿi philosophers and traditionists maintain that the Realm of Dharr precedes elemental bodies and belongs to the imaginal world (ʿālam al-mithāl). The implication of this view is that the human ṭīna must likewise be imaginal; yet in their writings no comprehensive analysis of the transmitted texts establishing the imaginal character of ṭīna is to be found. By contrast, numerous pieces of evidence may be offered from the narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt indicating both the imaginal nature of the Realm of Dharr and the imaginal character of man’s primordial ṭīna, thereby removing much of the ambiguity surrounding many religious doctrines on this issue. The findings of this study are significant for religious anthropology and carry important philosophical and theological implications for explaining the manner of the soul–body relation.
