Philosophers refer to accident that is essentially divisible as quantity. Quantity is generally divided into two types: continuous and discrete. Although Ayatollah Mesbah maintains that continuous quantities are modes of the existence of bodies, three different interpretations have been proposed concerning his view on the type of continuous quantities. Some claim that he regards continuous quantities as accidents, and it’s clear that an accident is counted among quiddative attributes. Others have concluded that, from his perspective, continuous quantities are not quiddative; and since they are not obtained through comparison, philosophical secondary intelligibles does not apply to them either. A third interpretation holds that continuous quantity belongs to the class of philosophical secondary intelligibles. Employing a descriptive–analytical–critical method, this article seeks to refute the first two interpretations and establishes the third - namely, that continuous quantities are philosophical secondary intelligibles - on the basis of Ayatollah Mesbah’s underlying principles, together with evidence drawn from his own statements.
